Why Visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

This UNESCO natural world heritage site is found in south western Uganda in Kanungu district. The park was gazetted in 1991 and declared a UNESCO natural world heritage site in 1994. The park covers an area of 321km2and lies at an altitude between 1120m and 2607m above sea level.

The park is famous because of the primeval Impenetrable forest and the endangered mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the 3 places in the world where mountain gorillas can be found in their natural habitat. The park has 18 habituated gorilla families that can be tracked by guests in the 4 sectors that make up the park.

Besides gorilla tracking, guests to Bwindi can also engage in natural walks for birding and to view the beautiful waterfalls and rift valley viewpoints. Other activities include community walks to learn about the Batwa and Bakiga ways of living.

The park can be accessed by road from Entebbe or Kampala and by air from Entebbe International Airport. It can also be accessed by road from Kigali International Airport – Rwanda.

Primate Encounters

Gorilla Trekking: This is the park’s hallmark activity. You hike through dense forest with a guide and rangers to find a habituated gorilla family. Once located, you are allowed one hour to observe and photograph them.
Gorilla Habituation Experience: Exclusively available in the Rushaga sector, this activity allows you to spend four hours with a gorilla group that is still being habituated. You accompany researchers and rangers to learn how the gorillas are trained to tolerate human presence.
Other Primates: While trekking, you may encounter L’Hoest’s monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, baboons, and chimpanzees.

Hiking and Nature Trails

Buhoma Waterfall Trail: A popular 3-hour walk that leads to three spectacular waterfalls. It’s excellent for seeing orchids, ferns, and butterflies.
Muzubijiro Loop: A 6km hike around a hill in the Buhoma sector, offering panoramic views of the Virunga Mountains and the forest canopy.
Rushura Hill Walk: A more strenuous hike that, on clear days, provides views of Lakes Edward and George, as well as the Rwenzori Mountains.
Ivy River Walk: A full-day (approx. 7 hours) 14km trek that follows an old road through the forest, often yielding sightings of bush pigs and various monkeys.

Specialized Wildlife Activities

Bird Watching: Bwindi is a premier birding destination with over 350 species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics. The Mubwindi Swamp Trail in the Ruhija sector is considered one of the best spots for serious birders to find the rare African Green Broadbill.
Mountain Biking: The “Ride for a Woman” community initiative in Buhoma offers guided bicycle tours along a 13km trail to the Ivy River. It’s a great way to see the forest and support local women’s empowerment.

Cultural and Community Experiences

The Batwa Cultural Experience: The Batwa were the original inhabitants of the forest. This tour involves walking with Batwa guides who demonstrate how they lived as hunter-gatherers, showing their methods for hunting with bows and arrows, gathering medicinal plants, and building grass huts.
Buhoma Community Village Walk: A 3-hour walk through the local village where you can visit a traditional healer, see how banana beer is brewed, and watch performances by local schoolchildren.
Buniga Forest Walk: Located near the Nkuringo sector, this is another community-led project showcasing Batwa culture and forest conservation.

Regional Extensions

Lake Mutanda & Lake Bunyonyi: Many visitors combine a Bwindi trip with a dugout canoe safari or a boat cruise on these nearby scenic lakes, which offer a relaxing contrast to the dense forest.
