Why Visit Kibale National Park?

Kibale Forest National Park is found in Fort Portal district in western Uganda. The park covers 795km2 and lies at an altitude between 1100m and 1590m.

The park’s ecosystem is made up of tropical wet forest, woodland, savanna and swamp vegetation. The park has recorded 351 tree species with some trees as tall as 55m and others dating back 200 years.

The park is famous for its primate population, it has recorded 13 primate species and 70 mammal species. Most guests visit Kibale to engage in Chimpanzee tracking and the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. Among other activities are night nature walks and birding in the wetlands close to the park.

Kibale Forest National Park is found in a very beautiful area dotted with crate lakes, hills and neat tea plantations.

This area can be accessed by road via Fort Portal or Kasese and by air to Kasese Airstrip.

Primate Encounters

Chimpanzee Tracking: The park’s signature adventure. Setting out from the Kanyanchu Visitors Center in small groups of six, you hike through the tropical rainforest with an armed UWA ranger guide. Once you locate a habituated chimpanzee family, you are granted exactly one hour to observe them feeding, playing, grooming, and swinging through the high canopy.
Chimpanzee Habituation Experience: A comprehensive, full-day immersive program designed for deep wildlife enthusiasts. You head into the forest before dawn (around 6:00 AM) to watch the chimpanzees wake up and leave their overnight nests. You spend the entire day accompanying researchers and rangers, observing intricate behaviors like hunting, patrolling territory, and nursing, before watching them build new nests at dusk.
Guided Primate Walks: Specifically tailored to showcase Kibale’s title as the “Primate Capital of the World.” These 2-to-4 hour forest walks focus on tracking and identifying the other 12 resident primate species, including the endangered Uganda Red Colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, Grey-cheeked Mangabeys, and Olive

Hiking and Nature Trails

Guided Forest Nature Hike: A seasonal, challenging 12km trek through the heart of the park. Mostly restricted to the dry season, this trail crosses diverse habitats including primary tropical rainforest, riverine forest, swamps, and open grasslands, concluding at a scenic forest elephant wallow.
Nocturnal Forest Walks: When the day shift goes to sleep, the forest’s night shift awakens. Armed with powerful spotlights and led by a ranger, these 2-hour night hikes depart at 7:30 PM to track elusive nocturnal creatures such as pottos, bushbabies, nightjars, tree hyraxes, and occasional serval or civet cats.
Children’s Eco-Educational Walks: Because children under the age of 15 are legally restricted from chimpanzee tracking, the park offers specialized, low-difficulty bushcraft walks. Experienced rangers teach young travelers about forest survival, medicinal plants, bird calls, and harmless wildlife.

Special Wildlife Activities

Bird Watching: Guided birding excursions depart Kanyanchu at dawn (7:00 AM) to target some of the 375 bird species recorded in the park. Serious birders head deep into the forest to tick off “Kibale specials” like the rare Green-breasted Pitta, African Pitta, Papyrus Gonolek, and Yellow-spotted Nicator.
Butterfly Watching: A quiet, methodical trek through forest clearings, damp mud patches, and streamsides. Guided by entomology-focused rangers, you can observe and photograph some of the park’s 250+ colorful butterfly species, including the massive African Giant Swallowtail.

Community & Eco-Tourism

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Walk: A 4.5km raised boardwalk trail through the Magombe swamp, located just outside the park boundary. Run as a highly successful community conservation project, this 3-hour walk is famous for close-up primate sightings and wetland birds, most notably the spectacular Great Blue Turaco.
Bigodi Village Cultural Tour: A community-led walk through Nyaibanda and Nyakalongo villages. You will visit a traditional healer to learn about local herbal medicine, drop by a local primary school, see how traditional banana gin (waragi) is brewed, and watch basket-weaving demonstrations by the Bigodi Women’s Group.

Regional Crater Lake & Landscape Excursions

Ndali-Kasenda Crater Field Hikes: A scenic exploration of the volcanic explosion craters bordering the park. The highlight is the “Top of the World” hike, which rewards you with 360-degree panoramic views of multiple crater lakes (like Lake Nyabikere and Lake Nkuruba), rolling tea estates, and the Rwenzori Mountains.
Amabere ga Nyina Mwiru Caves: Located near Fort Portal, a guided hike into ancient stalactite and stalagmite cave formations hidden behind beautiful natural waterfalls. The tour combines geological science with rich local cultural folklore from the Tooro Kingdom.
