Arrive at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your lodge in Nyungwe Forest (approximately 2 hours’ drive from Kigali). Rwanda’s clean, well-maintained roads make this a pleasant scenic journey through rolling hills and agricultural landscapes as you ascend toward the forest plateau.
Check into your comfortable forest lodge and enjoy lunch. Afternoon orientation walk through the lodge grounds, familiarizing yourself with the forest environment. Your experienced guide will brief you on Nyungwe’s wildlife, forest safety, and the week’s activities ahead. Rest of afternoon spent at leisure or on an optional nature walk in nearby forest sections.
Evening: dinner at the lodge overlooking the forest canopy. Early rest is recommended to prepare for tomorrow’s primate trekking adventures.
Golden Monkey Day! Pre-dawn wakeup with hot coffee and breakfast. By 5:30 AM, your tracker guides you into the misty forest. Golden monkeys are found only in the Virunga Mountains and nearby forests making this encounter truly rare. These endangered primates are instantly recognizable by their brilliant golden fur, black faces, and striking appearance.
The trek through dense montane forest typically lasts 3-4 hours, winding through moss-covered slopes and ancient trees. Your trackers use a combination of vocalizations and knowledge of monkey movement patterns to locate the troops. When you encounter them often startlingly close, you’ll observe mothers with infants, dominant males, and complex social interactions within the group.
Return to the lodge for late breakfast and rest. Afternoon visit to the lodge’s information center or an optional short guided walk. Evening reflection on the morning’s encounter.
Morning: The Legendary Canopy Walkway! Transport to the Canopy Walkway trailhead. This thrilling walk features suspended bridges and platforms suspended 50+ meters (165 feet) above the forest floor. As you cross the bridges, you’re literally walking through the rainforest canopy—the aerial realm most visitors never experience.
From this elevated vantage point, you’ll spot birds at eye level, glimpse canopy-dwelling monkeys, and experience the forest from an entirely new perspective. The walkway is perfectly safe with sturdy engineering and professional staff, but the sensation of standing above the forest is exhilarating. The experience takes approximately 2 hours, including interpretation of canopy ecology.
Afternoon: Chimpanzee Trekking. After lunch and rest, depart for chimpanzee tracking through different forest sections. Wild chimpanzees are more elusive than golden monkeys, making encounters variable but incredibly rewarding when they occur. Your trackers use calls, sign interpretation, and forest knowledge to locate habituated chimp communities.
When you encounter chimps, observe their problem-solving abilities, tool use, and complex social hierarchies. Listen to their vocalizations and witness the intelligence in their eyes, a profound moment of connection with our closest genetic relatives.
Early Morning Birding Expedition. Pre-dawn departure with your ornithologist guide into the forest. Nyungwe hosts over 300 bird species including numerous endemic species and African green ibis (locally called the “forest ghost”). The early morning chorus is extraordinary—dozens of species calling simultaneously creates a symphony of tropical rainforest.
Your guide uses calls, playback, and binoculars to locate and identify species. Even if you’re not an avid birder, the colors, behaviors, and sounds of Nyungwe’s avian life are captivating. Typical sightings include forest eagles, turacos, sunbirds, kingfishers, and numerous other woodland species.
Mid-Morning: Scenic Forest Trail Hiking. Return to lodge for second breakfast and rest. Afternoon guided hike on one of Nyungwe’s spectacular scenic trails. These trails pass through moss-covered forests, across misty ridges, and through habitats where you might spot red-tailed antelopes, colobus monkeys, or other forest inhabitants. The forest at this elevation is often shrouded in mist, creating an ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere.
Evening: return to lodge for dinner and evening relaxation.
Early morning final forest walk through Nyungwe’s trails, collecting any last primate or bird sightings. The montane forest at dawn is particularly beautiful with mist clinging to the valleys and light filtering through the canopy. Return to the lodge for breakfast.
Collect your belongings and prepare for departure. Depending on your onward travel plans, you may have time for a final visit to the lodge’s visitor center or shop for local crafts supporting community conservation initiatives.
Mid-morning transfer back to Kigali airport (approximately 2 hours). Arrive in Kigali with sufficient time for your onward flight. Depart Rwanda with unforgettable memories of golden monkeys, wild chimpanzees, the thrilling Canopy Walkway, and the pristine beauty of Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa’s most remarkable ecosystems.
